The problem is that it has to be center alignment (which is why I thought symetrical would be the best) and if you use more than one space character in a row it counts only one, so for example:

/     |     \

becomes

/ | \
/ | \

So, solution is to use what I called full picture (for example)

 / / ||| \ \
/ / | | | \ \

Or dots

 / . .|. . \
/ . . | . . \

As for size, your original koala is wide enough - it can be even as twice as wide and there's no limit in height as long as it looks nice,
