By the way, one question bothered my for quite a while. In Daggerfall, can you travel from town to town without the Fast Travel? Or does it generate some random scenery forever for you to run around when you leave town? I remember trodding for hours and not getting to the next town.
Yes you can walk on foot but it's quite tedious as you can imagine. The scale is a LOT larger than that of Oblivion.

Lucius, I'll make a statue of you in gold.. First the DarkXL engine, and now this... yaaaay
As interesting as it sounds, Daggerfall is one of those games whose atmosphere relies on the sharp blocky textures. The moment you "smooth" them out, the world looks bland and simplistic so either textures need to be redone or the blurring needs to be turned off.

Not a problem for me, as long as there is something to see I did walk around in both Morrowind and Oblivion for the scenery. And I remember doing that in Arena, only to find out that I've been running past the same farmland for hours

Well I base my assumptions on what he did with Dark Forces in DarkXL. I played through the first level with the last build, and it was just like the old Dark Forces, only natively running in windows. Ok, the freelook distorted the enemy sprites, but there's no way around that, I think. At least he didn't try to replace them with some horrible 3D models, alá Doomsday Engine I checked out the video at the DaggerXL site and it didn't look that bad. And I think he mentioned in the thread somewhere, that you can turn smoothing off. The real reason I'm looking forward to this is the fact, that even in the latest DOSBox, Daggerfall crashes on me quite often, and screws up the savegames. And finding out the next day, that your save you made after several hours of gaming is corrupted, is

AFAIK, you cannot walk from one point of interest (be it a town or a cave or a castle) to another. Each time you enter a town, the landscape is randomly generated, so you can walk around for hours and still find nothing.

I distinctly remember walking to a town - it's not because the landscape is random that the towns don't appear where they're supposed to.

It was posted somewhere on the official forums. Towns are specific cells, that appear only on the maps and are impossible to reach because they simply do not exist in the randomly pregenerated world. I will try to dig up the post but it was sometime ago and there are helluva lot threads there.

That's very odd because I'm nearly certain I did do it. Unless the community patch is the reason.

Well I cannot dig it up on the forums so I did a search thru Google and a post from these very forums popped up:

Quote:
Unlike Arena (the first elderscrolls game) there is nothing outside the city walls.
Which is kind of strange I think, but its true.
Once outside a city its all just a huge plane with a texture and 'craters' in it.
Outside of dungeons these planes will have some vegetation on it.

So you can't walk from one city to another... You can buy a horse but you can only use it inside cities. As a lot of cities are huge this can come in quite handy.

Like quests and cities the dungeons, too, are generated. That is to say all dungeons that aren't related to the mainquest.
And that is pretty much what I said. And I am pretty sure someone else explained this on the official forums too.

PS: To add to the above quoted statement, you can use your horse with fast travel, which will take less time if you use your steed.

Daggerfall's gameworld (the areas you walk through, not necessarily the lore and all that) is much, MUCH larger (the map is so large that it can take upwards of 45 minutes even to make it across short distances between locations if you decide to actually walk rather then use fast travel [...] the wilderness ranges from mostly flat terrain with litte bumps to fairly jagged terrain with big spikes [...]
I guess that settles it
(Taken from the Tips from the pros.pdf)
Shame, I wanted to have a little walk in the kingdom of Daggerfall.

I take back my statement, it actually IS possible to travel from one exterior location to another, sorry. I mistaked it for Arena, where the world is randomly generated each time you exit objects, so walking from one point to another would be impossible and would take you... forever.

However, the walking in Daggerfall seems to be a tedious and long task.
