It works for me, but we probably have a different version, we have a remake on AB that has not much to do with the original, so we can't be of much help.

Because it's a Team17 game.

Actually it wasn't protected because we were offering a freeware remake, don't ask me why though.

That's not possible , the version on FTP is the freeware remake, you can verify it yourself. Also I'm sure because I prepared the Alien Breed video for youtube at February (the archive was downloaded from here a couple of years ago) and reported that we were offering the freeware game to TotalAnarchy who removed the download and added the link into review.

You can see it here:

And into updaters forums:

But I don't know who substituted the original with the remake and when.

Default Alien Breed

I am the guest who posted around a month ago, and stated that I couldn't buy weapons in the PC version. Anyway, I was able to get a copy of Alien Breed SE for the Amiga going, and it's the same game (I'm guessing the people who ported AB to DOS ported the Special Edition rather than the original). The graphics and sound are clearly better, but it's also a lot harder. The aliens move much faster than in the DOS port. So far, I'm very pleased.
