![]() Lolita is a brilliant book, and the opening paragraph is one of my favourite ever
Nabokov had a brilliant understanding of how language works and the " Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta." is a beautiful example of that. Also, if you read the book and come away thinking you're meant to sympathize with the main character then you've misread the book. Humbert Humbert was actually Nabokov's least favourite character from all his works and although you view the story through his eyes, he is supposed to be repugnant.
