It is the same thing as far as 2nd edition is concerned.

There was no way to do what you yourself are referring to because it simply didn't exist. But I clearly remember multiclassing my spellcasters when I played when I was young. And it's exactly the same thing for almost all extent and purposes.

I don't remember if you can dual class in the Krynn games, but dual classing and multiclassing are different. Multiclassing is what non-humans can do to level different classes at the same time. Dual classing is only for humans, I think. That's when you start one class and then change to another class. Doing so makes you stop leveling up in your previous class and you lose all benefits from that class until you exceed its level with your new class. You could make ridiculously powerful characters with it, because you could make a lvl 39 fighter and dual class to a magic user and once you reach level 40 magic user, you're a lvl 39 fighter with lvl 40 magic user spells.

So they're different and have different advantages and disadvantages. I think dual classing is more powerful than multiclassing if you're willing to put the time and effort to basically level up twice.

Maybe, but once you switch classes, you must not use the previous class' special abilities, because you won't get any XP for the new class. You cannot just switch from one class to another when you feel like it. Not to mention that normal class restrictions apply.
