the game was released as freeware by Mike Lawrence, the author, on his own website (which no longer exists), around 1998 I think. I found it on 2004 while looking for him as I wanted to buy his previous game "Dungeons of Kairn". I didn't know Aethra was so popular (in fact, I never played it), so I thought it would be good to announce that the author released it in good faith for all people to enjoy.

The game file can be downloaded here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vzyykj0bhebs6iw/aethra.zip

At first it might look as if this is the shareware version, but if you look in the ingame manual, it should say somewhere that it is the registered version (it will also tell you not to distribute it, but that message no longer applies).

The full game included a spell list, which can be downloaded here:

The pack also included some tool to edit the save files, it looks like it was done by another person, but it was also hosted on Mike Lawrence's site. Here's the file:

Too bad I didn't think at the time to keep a copy of the website. I can no longer find it.

Even though the author didn't keep a copy of the full version of Dungeons of Kairn in his site, he had a more recent version of the shareware version (v.1.2), so I'll share it. The only copy I own might have one party already created, which you can delete inside the game if you want to start fresh:

Hope I helped someone!!

Do you remember the website's address? Maybe archive.org has a copy?

Is it the same as this one: KAIRN12.ZIP?

It was a long time ago, but as far as I remember, it was hosted at Earthlink.net. I've tried google cache, Earthlink and webarchive, but couldn't find it again. It took me years to find the site. The author, Mike Lawrence (Mike L.) used to be a Magic: The gathering judge around 1997-1998 (at the time of release of the Visions expansion set) and he participated in some old mailing lists of rules/judges. I think WotC has the archives stored somewhere. He had the link to his website on his signature, or maybe he only had his old e-mail account?

About the file Kairn12.zip, it's the same one. Good to know!

Reading more about the game, it looks like it was going to contain 3 episodes, but the full version was released as freeware because the author couldn't finish the later 2 episodes. It's also the only cRPG that uses the Rolemaster system.

Also it seems Mobygames doesn't list the author as the same one that did both Aethra Chronicles and Dungeons of Kairn. Someone with an account on Mobygames could fix that.

I've (finally) published most of the information I have on this game as website:
http://netsilik.nl/Aethra/.

All maps are browsable, with optional visible secrets and items (including the well hidden ones). I've also published enough information to make (minor) modding quite possible :-)
