I have onboard AC97/ct5880/PCI128 audio as well, and it was a PAIN to get working in pure DOS. Then I found these links: link 1 link 2
Works like a charm now.

As for the game itself... I remember reading a review in GamePro for the 3DO version and thinking it looked amazing. I've always wanted to play it since then, and now I have my chance. On first play, the graphics are a bit dated, if not just downright silly. But the gameplay is there. I can see where Resident Evil got its ideas from.
