I have experienced the same problem as others in here concerning the message:
"you need a CD rom drive to play this game"
For me pressing "f" or having a CD in my drive didnt do anything.
So I've tried to follow some of the instructions in here.. but...

I still can't get it to work!

I have the original game. I can install it and play it - without sound because the game doesnt recognize my soundsystem. So I figured if i try it throug the dosbox -it could simulate the Soundblaster system and i could get sound...

I'm no Dosbox wizard and I'm not sure I understand fully how it works - hope thats not required!!
But I have the game installed on my hard drive d:. When I open dosbox and try to run main.exe from my d-drive. The missing CD rom drive message pops up and I go nowhere.
Then I've tried to run setup (by dragging setup.exe onto dosbox.exe) but it stops after detecting sound - again nowhere.

In dosbox I've tried to mount drive c as my CD-rom drive, which is e:
Then I've mounted drive d as my d-drive - where the game is installed.
Now I can roam around in the game's directory (both e: and d and I've tried to install it again from there. This worked fine in the beginning - but when it comes to "detecting video system" it can't accsess (?) benchmark files and the install/setup stops.
When I type "main.exe" from "within" dosbox it says: setup needs to run first (or something like that) - but i cant complete setup!!!

I know this is an long. long explanation, but this is the only way I can do it..
hope anyone understands what I have done, and would like to do!!

Any help is welcome!

Thanks

That suggestion seems to work: Change the Main.EXE memory properties all to auto! What remains for me to solve is when I run Setup.EXE, and wish to have sound, I get the error :"Cannot find HDETECT.PIF". Where do I get HDETECT.PIF from? (Only the .EXE is present)

I guess somehow the HDETECT.PIF file was created, so I don't have this problem. But now I am just unable to play sound effects. After selecting some sound card from setup, when I run MAIN.EXE, it gives the error (but still runs the game): "Cannot find sound card specified". So there's no sound FX in the game.

hey i have a question for everyone. what is dos box?

and when i run kyrandia 3, i get this message:

Insufficient EMS or XMS memory available.
2.5 megabytes of EMS or XMS are required to run.

... and i have no idea what do. i'm using windows XP. and suggestions would be much appreciated
Go to your Legend Of Krandia 3 folder and right click on the setup - properties- compatibility put Windows 95 for that..... click on the Setup and use "tab" and click "no digital sound" save it. Now right click on the Main.exe -properties - Memory - where it says EMS choose 16384 do the same for XMS and then run the game clicking on MAIN.exe.

HDETECT.PIF is already in the folder . I think the .INI needs to be changed.

Just change the EMS memory in the HDETECT.PIF and HVERIFY to make that error go away. I still haven't gotten sound to work doing that though.

For sound issues, use VDMSound before trying DOSBox. VDMS uses much less system resources and requires far less configuration.

Question

I'm having some issues with the setup. I'm using DOSBox, and I extracted the folder as is the the same place that I put all my DOS games. When I run the "setup" it gives me a blank screen. When I hit enter it then pops me out of the black screen and back to the c:\ prompt giving me the error "Could not find gadget shapes."

Currently Running:
WindowsXP SP2
Sound Blaster Pro
DOSBox

The game should be working nicely without DOSBox. I played it with WinXP without SP2 back then.
