I just confirmed this is an early release of the game (release 1 or 2, it had 5 before the windows version). Because of this, the debug coding is still in game. While I can't remember all the debug commands, one useful one is the following:

Hold down the <SHIFT> key while you type numbers 1 to 0 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0). This will reveal the entire map the next time you change your map view. A very useful cheat at the start of the game to see if your location is worth playing without having to devote time finding out. Then, once you are done being omnipotent, do it again to return to normal.

Yes it's a cheat, but one that's built in, so even starting the game with the original.exe command (bypassing the added cheats, like unlimited cash) you can still do it.

Just thought someone might like to know...

yup i agree , this must be a cheat , this is not possible in civ 1 and not in the other civs either i think

if you play normal without cheat it is very difficult to do all this LOL and certainly not in 2700BC !!

for level 5 (emperor level ) you need luck too ,not just a good strategy , you need to make the right civ your friend and hope they won't attack you till you are ready , for a good game i recommend level 4 , it's very tough but you can win if you play it right
No I am pretty sure this is a bug...

If i Remember this correctly, its been a while...

You have a counter that says it takes two turns to build a road in a square...
As soon as you tell a settler to build a road, that counter gets incremented...

So, if you say build road then activate your settler then say build road again, then the counter sits on two and your road is built... 1 turn,

I don't use cheats and didn't even know there was a cheat available and I discovered this bug many years ago...

Never used it unless I was in real trouble though...

Ok I just hope the admin guys don't mind us talking about Civ III here...

I played it for the first time last night...
I played on the easiest difficulty setting of course and against quite a few oponents...

So anyway, I made contact with the Americans and a few few turns later they demanded technology from me. I said no and they decalred war.

I wasn't really worried because they weren't that powerful and their cities were quite far away from mine...

Anyway, a few turns later, the Iroquios (spelling?) with whom I had been friendly, signed a treaty with them of war against me, two turns after that, the Germans too etc etc etc...

eventually I was at war with 5 or 6 races and nothing short of giving them my cities could make peace...

My game was over and I had only just discovered Mathematics and this on the easiest difficulty...

So like what should I have done differently?

The other thing is...

How the Hel* do I remove an item from the build queue, without deleting the entire queue and redoing it, or alternatively, How do I add an item into a specific position in the build queue?

wow.... they really pummelled you into the ground

for starters DON'T play against 8 people to begin with, even on easy dude, start with you and 2 other civs to get the hang of everything and work your way up

that used to happen to me, i used to get HAMMERED all the time.... basically just practise at the game and become rather fast, if your civilisation is small and crappy compared to everyone else they become rather "bully-ish", it swings both ways of course, a good tactic is picking on a small civ and forcing them to give you their technologies for peace

as for the queues.... i wouldn't know because i never tried something so fidgety it doesn't take THAT long to do the queue again

Yes I guess I must try playing against fewer opponents to start...

But I am one of those people who love playing the biggest possible map with the most opponents possible for the game with the longest possible duration...
Just adds more spice...

With regards to the build queue though,
Its annoying when you just discovered a new tech and you go to all your ten cities and add the two new available buildings into the build queue and then the following turn you bully your way into a free tech from a weaker Civ which also unlocks a building, one which you would rather build before the other two...

Then you have to redo the queue 10 times...

But no matter...

A small price to pay for such a great game!

i was once one of those people, but until you're actually GOOD at this game you WILL be destroyed so fast it'll make your head spin
