Just finished re-playing this one through (though for the first time as a talkie; thanks Abandonia!). I was probably 14 the last time I played it, and can still remember restoring to the very beginning of Mordack's Castle, then playing through to the end, over and over again.

I remember that King's Quest V was Sierra's big launch into the VGA world, along with Space Quest IV and Police Quest 3, as well as Leisure Suit Larry 5 (all of which are pretty great titles, by the way). The first Christmas they all came out was pretty exciting, because I saw that distinguishable large rectangular box wrapped beneath the tree, but had no idea whether I'd be playing as King Graham, Roger Wilco, or Sonny Bonds on Christmas afternoon. Turns out it was good ol' Grahammy!

Now that I've played all the King's Quest adventures, I'd say the length and difficulty of this adventure is a bit disappointing when put next to King's Quest IV, which was about as perfect a game as I've ever played. The game loses speed after you get into the mountains, right up until you arrive at Mordack's doorstep. Also, I think there's a little too much of the "I'll help you, so you can help me later" type puzzles, which become so predictable that they're easily solved, trusting you have the item in your inventory. On the other hand, Sierra On-Line invested tons of time into those gorgeous 256-color graphics (look at the detail on the exterior of the bakehouse sometime -- it really caught my eye this time through), so if the story's not the best, the game definitely holds up. King's Quest VI remedied both of my complaints about King's Quest V, sporting longer gameplay and (much) tougher puzzles.

Anyway, go download King's Quest V and play it over and over again -- and do yourself a favor, don't cheat the first time through!

I played these along time ago and they where my favorite game. Untill the day I played Quest for Glory which was like kings quest (with a dumbed down story line) although you could kill things. Theres nothing more satisfying than playing through a good story line and killing stuff.

Maybe I never got far enough in the game, but I'm looking through the cds manual and the only possible codes I find are the spell ones.

This isn't the talkie version. I have the talkie version, if anyones interested email me at defzeppelin@rockandrollaintgonnadie.com

Whoa wait a second, they added the talkie version? =x It says 60mbs though, the one I have is straight out of the CD, and all the files equal to 113mbs, or does zipping shrink it down that much?

Um, hi there.

I gotta say I'm impressed with this site! It's so hard to find old Sierra games these days. I was overjoyed to find KQ5 here after trying forever to get my old floppy version working with no success.

Unfortunately, I'm having some difficulty with the version I downloaded here, and I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem. The annoying thing is that it's right at the end, right after you finish Mordack off. The final cutscene begins, but it just stops shortly after Cassima shows up. The game dosen't freeze, nor do I get booted out, it just stops. Another odd symptom which may be related is that the fire pit on the far right of the screen turns wierd colors.

Has anyone else run into this problem? I'm running the game under the latest version of DOSBox at around 3000 cycles on an XP machine. Any suggesstions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Is that the original disk-based version, or the talkie one that's up on the site now? The original version did have that bug, but the talkie one should let you finish the game.

The bad news, however, is that your disk version saved games are unlikely to work in the talkie version.

Sorry I forgot to mention that.

Yeah, it's the disk-based version, which is the version I prefer. I think I already have a good copy of the talkie version somewhere, though. If this is indeed a known problem, has anyone found a way around it, or am I out of luck?

Thanks for your help!
