Have you run all the free virus programs?

eg.
Search and Destrory
Lavasoft Ad-aware SE

My old computer used to freeze alot, I think it may have been due to overheating though. Maybe you have a conflicting program installed, or IRQ/PORT/DMA configuration problem. (Some motherboards have a solution for this as it may be a sound driver issue, not sure if its for XP as I know its relevant for Win98 dos crashes).

Are you able to supply any more details of your computer, and when excatly the game freezes, 10 minutes into the game? Straight away? Its a crime that you can't play any games and Id love for you to find a solution :bye:

Im afraid I can't be of any help but i'll research a little, ya never know k:

I tried using DOSbox, but the game I tried to run (Magic the Gathering) did not start using DOSbox...
If that's the same Magic the Gathering I have (MPS 1997) then it's a windows game, and i can't remember having it work in XP. try adjusting the .exe's compatibility settings.

In fact DOS Box is only needed to slow games. If you want to run more well-built game, such as WarCraft II, for example, then you should better run it from Windows, because DOS Box won't take it. I ran Master of Orion on DOS Box 0.62 and game wasn't playable. It worked so slow, that... well, you know, what I mean. And even increasing of cycles won't help.
windows = if it runs perfectly, fine
windows + vdmsound = if it runs perfectly, fine

dosbox = for all the hundreds of games that DONT run perfectly on the above ...

the game (games) start perfectly and I am able to start playing; but after a while (can be 1 minute, can be 15) it freezes...

So, Magic the gathering starts in XP...

Magic the Gathering is notorious for having trouble working under XP for a numerous reason that doesn't automatically appear from one PC to another...

I must be lucky because it works perfectly here.

Ok, but it is not only that game that freezes.... happened with "Wacky weels" and my old Nes emulator (Nesticle)... havent dared tried so many games since the computer seem to dislike them all... :P

probably a good idea is to reinstall XP?

Do you hear your PC fan working inside? Was the box quite loud before it just turned out to be silent for no apparent reason?

If so you should check if your PC fan and your power supply fan are still working. If not then you could end up with a nasty surprise in addition to the frequent freeze-up...

I have actually thought of that the fan might be malfunctioning... but since the computer sounds like a large vacuumcleaner it is probably ok...
Today the computer froze when I played GTA Vice city.... this is starting to really get on my nerves....

turn it off, open the case and check inside.
check the memory is in tight
check the cables are all in properly
check the heatsink is sitting on the cpu properly
then turn on the machine, and see that the fan is going round on the cpu

Also, check if the fan is properly oiled. Friction can result in decreased efficiency (and UBER-loud sound too).
