Its a good idea, but we don't know the long time effects of it, so I'm against it until there are statistics which prove that it is not harmfull when eaten for years.

genetically engineered food is a great benefit to society. I will agree to that, but i don't like the idea of eating it personally. When you start messing with the basic bulding blocvks of life, things start to change in ways I'm sure cannot be good.

That, and GEF has caused a great deal of stress in the farming community because of certain limits and regulations placed on the engineered seed. Such as if a farmer lives next to a farmer that uses the GE seeds and somehow (by wind or bird) a GE plant grows in the original farmers field. He will be fined for not having a contract with the original manufacturor of the seed.

Crazy, isn't it?

SOMETHING TO THINK about:
Would this help fight the world hunger? It hasn't yet! There's more then enough food in the world as it is - it's just not distributed equally. Imagine - people in south-east Asia export huge amoungts of rice - while starving them selves. They are forced to sell rice to foregin countries, that already have too much food, yet they haven't enough. That's something that can't be changed simply by providing more food. Some governments don't care about people, they just want to export - so they do, regarthless of the probles involved.
i agree with this. there is more than enough food for everyone in the world right now.
its a political and economic system that lets some tiny proportion of the population have vast insane amounts of wealth, while the majority are in poverty.

having said that, there is an argument that GM crops can help people in poor countries produce more, given that theyre prone to drought, locusts and other problems.
the problem there is that the GM research is just into making more MONEY for the western system. they want to charge the 3rd world a lot of money for GM crops that would help them. although communist countries like cuba have the kind of research for developing countries.

the natural stuff theyve bred is tasteless crap now.

we get apples from AUSTRALIA to the uk.. and theyre all the same with no blemishes and they taste of nothing.
apparently this is because the people demand apples that "look nice" and because even with shipping it across the entire world, the apples are still cheaper than growing them here. its craziness.

there's also the consideration that most GM crops are designed to bes terile, ostensibly to prevent them spreading/cross-pollenating, but as a neat benefit it means that the company making it get to charge the farmer for seeds every single year, not just after a poor season when he hasn't been able to keep seeds from his own crop.

flying things halfway around the world is certainly stupid. it's down mainly to the differences in labour (and in the cases of australia and the US in particular, land) prices and the stupid cheapness of jet fuel (which also fails to take into consideration its environmental cost - jets are hugely damaging for the environment, both once they're in operation and before they're made. imagine the amounts of energy and resources that go into making an aeroplane).

Actually, the UN has programs to buy varities of seeds to give to thrid world countries. In fact, many successful varities of crops are being sold to third world countrtes for very little money by the companies that made them.

yeah but you have to look at it through my cynical eyes.
they get the countries dependant on GM then they can charge them what they like.
