Iīve got a weired problem. Since my girlfriendīs old Pentium II 233 didnīt work properly anymore I decided to reinstall. She used WinXP ( yeah I know. One of the reasons why it didnīt work anymore. But she wants it like this) and so I tried to reinstall it. So I deleted the partitions which werenīt set cleverly. With the first hard drive no problem. But when I deleted the partitions of the second winxp setup hang up. "Ok" I said to myself and rebooted. But I didnt even reach the partition screen anymore. The machine just hang up again.
So I tried to install win98, which said that there were too much data on drive c: and it should be deleted BEFORE installing. But I donīt have the slightest idea how I should do that. Sadly, I donīt own pure dos on floppy disks. And Win2k freezes as well as WinXp.
Does anyone have any suggestions for this problem?

For Win98 type FDISK in DOS mode. (In installation screen hit F3 twice to exit install) To remove CP partitions, select DELETE NON-DOS PARTITION.

I had simillar problem when CPU fan was broken on friends PC. Check if all fans are working correctly.

Hope this helps.

Well, it was that easy. Thank you very much. You saved me from losing my notebook to my girlfriend k:

BTW is 4GB too small for WinXP? I think so...

No you can just make it, WinXP itself is around 2.7 Gigs but you have to make sure that when you start installing programs you leave enough space for teh swap file.

About half a gig for the swap, maybe more. So long as she doesn't install much more than a browser and an old copy of office she should be ok methinks.

IMHO, there is no point in having WinXP on such an old piece of hardware. Win98SE will work perfectly on that system, and much faster then XP. Besides, it takes about ~300 MB of space, and if you are thoughtful with installation options, even less.

Tell her that all the trouble came from the fact that XP should not be installed on machines that old. And that with installing W98SE they will go bye-bye.

AFAIK there are many "skins" for W98. Guess that you can find an XP-lookalike too.
