Also, something that happens to me: the intro (those red letters appearing) looks garbled, but the game works fine. Just skip the intro by pressing space bar.

![]() I never see the intro. All what I see is a black screen until I click on my mouse button. I do hear the sound fine tough.
The tutorial seemed quite screwed for me too. Perhaps if you want to see the tutorial you should set the newspaper option for each option so it doesn't "jump" on the screen when something happen. This way the "hand" won't mess up it's commands. |

![]() Hi, I hope one of the clever lads here can help me.
I am a stupid mother of a son who wants to play TTD. We bought the game in the UK in 2001, but never had a PC big enough to play the game. Now his dream came true and he has the PC, loaded the game (we have XP running) and now? Problems. When he tries to play a message comes up saying "The system cannot open the com3 port requested by this application. Click on close to terminate." A choice between "Close" and "Ignore" comes up. Apon clicking "Ignore" the same message comes up, but now refers to com4. Is the PC coo-coo or will it work if we download this patch I read about on this site? He doesn't have problems playing other games like Commando's and Stronghold etc. Please mail me at susie [at] webmail.co.za. If there is somebody in SA we can phone for help it would be appreciated if a contact number can be sent to this address. He is very disappointed that he cannot play this. Thanx a mil.

![]() I found a dirty trick you can pull on your rivals if they start after you. If you use railroad tracks to block their stations or force them to build bridges over your tracks, you can make them spend more money than they need to. If you build two or three tiles of tracks along the path they want to take, their bridges will be longer when they try to bridge over you.
Example: Rival's intended path: --- Your block: |||| (One - is two game tiles, one | is one game tile) -------||||------- If you're quick, the rival may even try to build around your block, so you'll have to stop it. When the rival is forced to withdraw tracks, he gains some money back for each, but he doesn't break even. I think if he withdraws bridges, stations, and tunnels, he won't get anything back. I tried this tonight on one rival, and two years after he started, his company was worth about $10,000, and he STILL didn't have any vehicles. You will lose a little money doing this, but it won't be nearly as much as your rival, especially if he has to remove bridges, tunnels, and stations. |

![]() Well, that's nothing less than cheating by my own oppinion.
I noticed tough that building tracks in diagonals stops anyone from building a bridge over it. Pretty annoying for the computer players. |

![]() I wouldn't say it's cheating so much as buying yourself some time. If a company goes bankrupt, the computer will generate a new company later on. Hopefully by then you'll have mustered the financial resources to prevent the newcomer from gaining too much ground. The replacement in my current game started off with two airports and a Dart-class airplane, but didn't make a lot of money.
I've also heard that buying 75% of a new rival company early on is a good idea and brings a lot of cash down the road. This depends, of course, if you're trying to mess with their company to begin with. Some questions: 1. I had a train hauling wood from a forest to a sawmill, and a company built a train from that forest to the sawmill I was delivering to, and the forest stopped providing my train with wood. Is there a way I can take control back? 2. What determines company value? The value of every piece of property you own? |

![]() 1. When 2 companies are trying to haul something from the same source, a fight insue. When you look at the company prodiding resources you'll see a % displayed. This shows how much of it's product is being transported.
If you look at your own station there you'll see a % too, that's the % of product you personnaly receive from the company everytime it produce something. This mean that the higher the %, the more you'll have to transport. You can increase the % by increasing the frequency of your trains at the station (having 2 or 3 trains, even perhaps slower, with smaller loads usually help a lot here) and/or by shortening the time your train wait at the station before it is fully loaded by reducing the number of carts it carry. 2. Company value is everything you own plus your money minus what you borrow from the bank. |
