I have had a few little goes with swordfighting, but what I do best is quarterstaffs. I was taught by my aunt, as she and my uncle are both medieval weapon types, they also met role-playing as Vikings (it's a funny world...).

I prefer a staff to be honest as they are quite versatile, stronger than you would think (theirs are iron-shod) and can also push two or three sword-fighters down at the same time.

Swords on the other hand are easier to hold, can and will kill people in a single blow and are, of course, glorified in films. I don't think that I have seen a film involving a quarterstaff since Robin : Prince of Thieves.

Oh and by the way, Ninja-Tos are close-up fighting weapons, which is useful because they can be used crouching and also go under the slower katana-blows.

I think that they're stabbing weapons too, and because of this they could be loaded with poison and, as such, could stab a samauri once and kill them quickly, instead of a 'real' swordfight, which would probably get a ninja killed due to their weapon being poor on the defence.

Katanas on the other hand are slicing weapons and will cut through necks, faces and most types of fruit. But they are slightly unwieldy in close-quarters fighting. They are better on the defence than a Ninja-To, but this is negated by ninjas being more flexible.

I would have thought that a Samauri would carry a Wasishaki (spelling?) for close-quarters fights instead and I also believe that they slept with one under the bed for this very reason.

Question - Would a ninja carry two Ninja-Tos or one and a tanto?

Oh yes and two handed swords are not really recommended unless you are incredibly strong and have had experience with a different sword style before.

I would personally recommend a cutlass to start with, because they are quite good for learning and will also open up career opportunities in the field of piracy.

Swords are easier to hold? Than a quarterstaff? Well I guess that is up to you then, Because I am also pretty decent with a staff.

Ninjas would carry whatever they wanted to get the job done. Some of them even did like katanas.

I have a strong desire to learn some basics in swords fighting. :Titan:
In the town, where I live, there isn't any sport club like that, only "tolkienists", people, who play RPG games based on Tolkien's immortal story "Lord of the Rings". So I thought, if somebody knows a links to some sites or maybe books. I have downloaded some interesting manuals of basic training. If somebody interested in fencing on that kind of weapons, I may recommend Academy of Medieval Martial Arts
Interesting site. Thanks. Im gonna enjoy their techniques of bowmanship. k:

It seems to me we will soon have a reall RPG party here... :w00t:
Each with his unique abilities and weapons.

Anyway i jsut wanted to say that modern sabres were't so bent and they were light, their balde was shaped (is shaped) triangual, so it goes in faster and goes out faster.

Dues to the flexible steel they are extreemely fast and often in competittion (even high ranking ones) judges don't have a clue to what happened on the piste. We can see it in reply, but judges are on their own. and trust me it is damn hard even for trained eye to see what actually happened. The slicing is so fast that you often don't even see it. you have the device that shows you the hit but you don't see it (like in foil or eppe).
so it doesne't come as a surprise that they quarrell a lot on the tournaments. and the older the guy are the more they quarell. LOL seriously....

Of course, sabers are good too. I have a saber fencing manual too  , but I'm fond of knights from 14 years. About 3 years ago interest faded, but now, when I got the opportunity to learn how to fight with swords, it reappeared again. Now I have big plans: I need good sword (and I know, how I shall make it) and simple clothes for knight. Cloak and shirt. After that I will only need ring mail, boots, cuirass or any breast plate... In all, the thing is little.
BTW: That's a good idea 'bout RPG party! Only it's a pity, that we live on different sides of the world. I really miss good live RPG club. Tolkienists - isn't good idea, as you understand. But you can train with them at least.

I don't know about two handed sword fighting, but i have a great book on classic fencing called" The Art And Science Of Fencing" by Nick Evangelista. It gives a general overview of classic spanish fencing as well as a section on pshycology. I highly recomend it. I'm lucky my town has fencing, wrestling jujitsu judo tkd karate and boxing. I am also thinking about starting up at the fencing school. good luck.

Actually, a to's far from nearly the same as a katana. Katanas are made of high-quality steel, while tos're made of lesser value, making them more prone to break. Katanas're allowed to shine, while tos'd make it hard for a ninja to go unseen if his sword'd shine, so they made it so it doesn't shine. Also, tos're alot smaller than katanas, as they often had to be used in corridors, and a small sword's more useful there.

I can't agree, i used both and they can be used in "quite the same way"!
You have to choose a katana or a to, just according to your character, but you will use them in the same way...

Original japanese katanas are little, cause japaneses are actually little! And about the steel... you can make a sword with the iron that you want (if you can afford it), don't you?

About the shining... well i just talked about the "handling" and not about what is better to use in a secret killing mission...
Gee. Don't insult the Japanese that way. The Chinese were, and always have been smaller than the Japanese

If you know anything about history you know that To swords are MUCH smaller than a katana.

A roman shortsword was pretty much a lead pipe with a slight wedge for an edge. [/b][/quote]
are you saying that being little is an insult? and if so why are you insulting chinese...oh yeah, i'm little too so you're insulting me... :P
