I prefer good games over either one, but alot of old games actually let me play. Too many new games tend to explain everything. Just imagine them making Super Mario Bros 1 nowadays. It'd go like this:

First level starts.
"Press left and right to move. Go on, give it a try."
Player moves and the first enemy appears
"Avoid enemies like this."
"ADVANCED! Big tip: Jump on an enemy to defeat it."
"To jump, press B"
Player squashes the enemy and sees the first ?-block
"TIP! Hit these blocks from the bottom by jumping against it. Try it."
etc
I do hate tutorials. But some people actually need to be told how to move. heh

I'm just afraid of one thing: if I put Wing Commander Prophecy on my P.C. isn't it just going to be a disappointment? I mean: gameplay all right, but won't the movie parts just seem so old fashioned?

For us, more experienced (read: older ) gamers, part of the charm of old skool is probably the romance of these older games and the feeling of the "good old days".

I'm actually very interested to see how the gamers' age reflects on the preference of old skool vs. next-gen for that matter.

Any insights, guys?

Well, I'm 15 years old and I have no idea how that reflects on my game preferences. As long as it's fun, I like it. No matter the game's 20 or 1 years old.

Oldies are better, because the game producers (like Peter Molyneux or Sid Meier) were young and full of imagination and were eager to try something new and fun on a new industry... or something like that... anyway...

Doesn't matter to me if they're old or new - I just play them insanely.

The way I see it. Whether the game is old or not, holds no bearing on it's fun quality. Old games just don't recieve as much respect as they used to. I like a game simply if I enjoy it, and it really makes me forget that several hours have passed by.

All new games become old, and the later folks all look back at those old games we now consider new and call them great. So... For me importantly... It's the enjoyability of it all.

Newbies.

Despite the fact that oldies are good, a good newbie is about 1000 times better than a oldie.
Also I'm not a old man who looks back nostalgicly and calls this generation insane. There's probably 12 year old gamers who're going to look back in their 30s and say, Why can't they make games like they did back in the early 2000's?

It'll always be like that.

Unless it's Tetris, none can beat Tetris.

EDIT: I also believe that there's no lack of originality in this industry, just because we're getting more games, doesn't mean we can single out all the games that have had their share of unique quality. Take Black & White, Sacrifice, Half-Life, F.E.A.R. , Baldur's Gate, and etc.

There are genuinly a staggering amount of revolutionary breakthrough games in this age. More so than there were in the 80's or 90's. I still think Tetris is the best tho'.

I'd rather play Tetris over oldie and newbie.

I think it's a little unfair to compare games from the earlier years of personal computers/consoles with more recent games. But only a little.

It's the same with any new innovation - when the technology is fresh people have to experiment with it, see what works, what doesn't work, what might work if the technology improved. That's when there is most inventiveness, most quirky development and the era from which sound ideas emerge. Look at the early history of the automobile - almost every aspect of modern car design has an early 20th century ancestor. I don't suppose many people miss manually controlled ignition advance and retard but I think most of us would concede that early cars, whatever their faults and sometimes because of them, had far more character than the technological clones produced today.

So if games today seem derivitive, distinguished only by their graphics I think that it's because the the companies have decided which designs work, i.e. which make money. I think there is still innovation though - but never again to the degree we had in the 80's.

Well, I must confess: even though I'm a fan of old games, I prefer new ones. Yah, most of them are graphics-based, but since I am a tech-freak, I like those... I am really frustrated that my PC can't run Age III, The Sims 2...
But no worries. At least I can play abandonware! :bannana:
