![]() Nice caps thing wt.
I actually like Hotu, especially the mac section, but I find Abandonia's design much more warm and open. I can't stand that pink...thing. Eventhough they have LOTS of games, I think they need a little tidying up, |

![]() Let's say it like this:
Everytime I enter Abandonia, I feel like entering a nice little house, with some cool things (the games) and some cool guys to hang around with (the community). Everytime I enter HotU, I feel like getting lost on a huge factory-area or in a big warehouse or something like this. HotU may have more games, but as Grinder already stated, it is more comfortable around here. Go Abandonia |

![]() I've admired Abandonia for quite sometime since I discovered it early this year, but never got involved with it. I've been wasting away on HOTU for years.
Currently HOTU is experiencing the longest dry spell in updates that I've ever witnessed. Honestly prospects look pretty dismal from now on in respect to the many facets of the site. I see Abandonia as surpassing HOTU (if it hasn't already in many ways) and I'd like to help in facilitating that ascension. One thing that has truly bothered me about abandonware sites though, is their reliance on cd-rips instead of full ISO versions. I see this widespread practice as diminishing greatly the art we're trying to preserve. I've taken it upon myself to try and rectify this in my own small and insignificant way. But since this thread isn't about that, I won't ramble on further about it. Hail Abandonia. I'm ready to be converted now. |

![]() (I know he just did a necro, but it was valid)
The issue with CD-rips are made for one purpose; Bandwith/discspace. We prefere CD-rips and have the "extras" as optional. The reason here, is actualy not the discspace, as we have rather good of that, but the fact that a 400 MB download will take concierably longer to finish, then a 60 MB archive would, and thereby clogging the cable for a longer time, and gives the rest of the users less bandwith to share amongst them. HOTU has the option of Torrents, and personaly i like that option, but in our case, we've more or less said we will not use that option for now as a download-source, as it's less "direct". However, If we get our hand on a mighty server with many maaaaany GB of space, we could concider a stock of ISO's just for the preservation-cause. But as said above, it would be verry unlikely that it would be public access due to the bandwith. Imagen in a few years when those double or tripple CD-games or even DVD's start to reach the age where we would concider it; That's alot of space. And belive it or not, we have quite a few users who connect to us using a Dail-Up 56.6k modem. That alone is worth having a smaller download-size for.. 10 MB = 1 hr of download more or less.

![]() I'm a bit jaded with HoTU simply because Gender Wars is no longer available for download there. I know that's not her fault, but..MEH.

![]() I'm a fan of both sites.
But that said, the site design of hotu is shockingly bad, whereas Abandonia has those slick, shiny clean lines that make it easy to navigate and a pleasure to use I've had very good experiences using the help forums on hotu - with quick response times, and useful (and polite) responses. I think that the help forums of Abandonia are also very good (for pretty much the same reasons) but, the funny thing is that I've never really needed to use it here that much because - a) the downloads work, and never have missing files (which I did encounter once on hotu, but the problem was quickly attended to.) b) the clean, simple layout of Abandonia makes it clear which (if any) emulators are necessary, where to find them, and how to use them. I usually find the reviews on hotu useful, but I prefer the way Abandonia uses many different members to review the games because I feel it removes any "genre bias" from the site - I sometimes feel that the reviews in hotu are a little biased by her (I'm so sorry, I can't remember the amazing lady's name) preference for adventure games. Although, to be fair, she does usually note within the relevant reviews that she prefers a different style of gameplay. The other little thing, that has already been mentioned by many others before me - the slow page loading and file download time of hotu is frustrating, 'though with such a massive site I'm (usually) willing to forgive them. There will always be a warm little spot in my heart for hotu, the massive, sprawling, somewhat confusing museum that it is. But Abandonia will always be my first love, 'though it may be smaller, it is much more clear and usable.... and after all, they do say that "size doesn't matter," don't they ...Just felt like adding my little two cents, now I'll stopping playing with the dead

![]() If this topic is allowed to continue...?
I must say I found some pretty nice titles at HOTU, but that's pretty much it. Often, as it was insinuated above, the games are not working due to missing files (bad rips). It doesn't give me the impression of warmth or hospitality, but I accept that and go "down to business only" there. Needless to say, I never "joined" their community, and never bothered to enter their forums with one exception, where I wanted to know why the game didn't work at all. Now, about A: Warm, welcoming site with titles that really pluck my strings
