Fine for one game and one configuration Caz - but what about when you have a dozen or more DOS games your flipping between? Or even just 3 or 4. Want to re-configure Dosbox for each game each time? Or just set up eachj game in D-Fend and then just double click on the game you want? Any time I want to play one of my DOS games, all I have to do is go into the genre (because you can define the games by genre as well as put specific info like cheats etc for that game!) then double click on the game I want and voila, all the setting up to make that one game play the best it can within dosbox is handled by D-fend. Personally, I couldn't live without it.
[/b]
I've been using dosbox for awhile now and I don't have to reconfigure it everytime I want to play a game. Just mount C: and choose which one I want to play from my hardrive and voila your playing I guess if you don't like the DOS environment then D-fend would be preferable but I never minded dos and found it easier to deal with sometimes than windows.

The only thing you sometimes have to configure is the IRQ for soundblaster in the setup program but I'm pretty sure you would need to do that with D-fend too.

Your help is very much appreciated, 'Mighty Midget'. k:

I was a bit slow to realise how exacty that password business worked, I hought there was a separate code page I did not find in the manual, with "pages and lines" as numerical answer codes. Looks like I overcombined somewhat. No wonder that I did not find any inside the material on the game download page

Noticed I said if you had many games... One of course is easy, but everyone knows different games need different DOSBox configurations, D-Fends makes profiles that rememer those configs, you play one game that needs one config, then anothr that needs another different config to work and of course you have to set it up in dosbox but you don't have to because in D-Fend it remembers it. Double clicking on a game title and having it open so I can play it in as perfect a way as I can get it is a lot easier than opening DOSBox, configuring it for the particular game you're going to play and then playing the game.

And please, I was saying that it was be easier to tell a newbie to tell them to get D-Fend than it would be to teach them though these threads how to configure DOSBox, and I still stand by that entirely.

I've never actually used D-Fend so I can see your point about it being easier to just double click an icon once you've set it up to teach newbies the easiest way to play the games, but what do you mean different games need different Dosbox configs? The only thing I normally have to do once I start a game is pump up the speed or lower it according to how old it is. I've never had to change anything else but that. I may have been extremely lucky but I've played a lot of older games like really old games like Pool of Radience to not as old like this one Lands of Lore and never had a problem. Like I said though I've probably been really lucky with the games I've chosen to replay. Anyways thanks for letting me know about D-Fend if I ever run across a game I'm having problems playing I'll give it a try.

Skaven if you play only one type of game from the same time period, you may be okay. But even there, with D-Fend, it is so easy to play around with sound and graphics and cycles, etc, that I think in some ways with D-Fend I am getting a better result than someone just setting up DOSBox. And again I would point out trying to tell a newbie how to configure sound and graphics and cycles and sometimes even more is going to be a heck of a job in a thread than explaining how to do the same things in D-Fend or other front end.

I play DOS games from the 1980's to the mid to late 90's, I play strategy and RPG and shooter games, I find that very few of my games have identical setups, but I agree, I do have some where only the cycles are different, so I agree with you there!

I started with DOSBox, and I have moved to using a front end because it is a 1000% easier, if it easier to use, it's got to be easier to tell a newbie to get it and use it in my mind, as I believe he is much more likely to be successful and then become a fully fledged retro gamer. I can well believe a newbie that has too much grief will be switched of retro gaming and may move away, that would be to the detriment of him, us and this website! So I say recommend D-Fend as often as possible. It just makes perfect sense to me.

Okay you've convinced me to give it a try It's funny how attached people or least I do to certain ways of doing things and hate it when someone offers a different idea. Heck Dosbox first allowed me to finally get Ultima Savage Empire working (with Sound) after years of having to switch our hard drives with different operating systems to play different games, also the slowdown method dosbox used was a heck of a lot better than moslo or CPUkiller. I can't even switch out hard drives anymore due to the Duel processors (Windows 98 doesn't like them) So I use Virtual PC for windows games and Dosbox for Dos. Anyways point is Sorry about the snippy remark about the whole Dos thing and I'll give D-fend a look.

Never get started talking about Fallout you become really cranky afterwords

One thing I can tell you about D-Fend: Don't bother.
It's known to cause compatibility problems with games that would otherwise work perfectly in DOSBox.
I suggest either that you use DBGL or go the way I did - creating customized configs and shortcuts to run DOSBox with the given config. It's quite easy, and gets the "click icon to run the game" result.

Okay, please tell me there is a stupid herb in Cimmeria somwhere...I got to the place where you have to leave armor, medicine, jewelry, and a weapon, and of course I don't have any herbs. And stupidly, I left my Jade Necklace in the jewelry spot, then went galavanting around to the treasure chests to see if they contain a herb...but of course, I'm only a level 4 Rogue without the necklace and can't pick the damned locks! And when I went back to where I left the Jade Necklace, it's gone...

So...is there any hope? I suppose I could run around with a crossbow and shoot those green frog-looking things in an attempt to gain a Rogue level and to try to pick the locks...but does anyone happen to know if there's an herb stored in the castle somewhere?

there will be a crossbow (or dagger?) which increases your rogue skill. but btw, if you keep clicking lockpicks on a chest over and over like your mouse was on fire, after while it always worked for me
