The first thing I think of when you say "trapped in a house with a maniac" is
Clock Tower for the SNES (technically Super Famicom since it was a japanese only release).
It is one of the first survival horror games, and is unique cause you are a girl who can NOT fight back against the creepy as hell ugly boy-thing with his giant pair of scissors. There are lots of different endings, and LOTS of ways to die (mwahaha), the music is also frightning as hell, and gives me the chills just listening to it. This and Silent Hill are my most favorite horror games.

And of course there are the Clock Tower sequels for PSX and PS2 but they aren't as good (I hear).
Maybe The Last Express? I haven't played it exactly, but I think you are trapped on a train with a murder investigating the murderer.
